Alice Dorothea Uhrich

August 12, 1924 — May 19, 2017

Alice Uhrich, 92 of Wood River died Friday, May 19, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center Wood River.



Services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Wood River with Pastor Brad Jepsen officiating. Burial will be at the Wood River Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 5 to 7 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Hall County Humane Society. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family.



Alice was born on August 12, 1924 at Wood River to John and Mary (Carstensen) Layher Sr. She grew up in Wood River attending District #24 School and graduating from Wood River High School in 1941.



After high school Alice worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. Working there she met Elmer Uhrich. Alice and Elmer were married on November 21, 1945 in Grand Island. They lived in the Wood River area and moved to their current home just east of Wood River in 1959. Alice again went to work at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during the Vietnam War. After the war she worked at Rockwell in Kearney before her retirement.



Alice attended the Cameron Church as a child and then the Wood River Presbyterian Church.



Alice enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, canning vegetables, her cats as she never would turn away a stray, but most of all her family and especially her grandchildren.



Alice is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Sue Uhrich of Shelton and Don and Kathy Uhrich of Wood River, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, John Layher Jr., Frank Layher and Lester Layher, and sisters Helen Knick, Elsie Flannery and Ruth Engel.
