Alma Smith, 87, of Grand Island died on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at her home in Grand Island. Services will be at 10 am on Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. Interment will be at Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday morning from 9 am until service time at the Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family. Alma was born on July 14, 1925 at Wakpala, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred and Martha ((Sieler) Rieger. She grew up in Wakpala and received her education there. She was united in marriage to Jack Smith on October 31, 1964 in Central City, NE. The couple lived in Grand Island where Alma worked at Delicious Foods. Alma volunteered at the Salvation Army for over 25 years and also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sonja Zwiebel of Grand Island; four grandchildren, Christine Zwiebel of Grand Island, Nick and Lisa Zwiebel of Omaha, Jennifer Wiese of Ft. Collins, CO, and Jon and Bobbi Jo Pottoff of Stratton, NE; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Rieger of Puyallup, WA; sisters, Addy McCurley of Grand Island and Ruth Sharp of Rapid City, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Smith, her parents and brothers Harold Rieger and Teddy Rieger.
