Arnold J. Sperling, 91, of Wood River died Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM Friday, May 28th at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Jorge Canela will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until service time Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Veterans Home.
Arnold John Sperling was born March 26, 1930, at Ashton, Nebraska to George O. and Anna Belle (Kwiatkowski) Sperling. He grew up in the Ashton/Ord area and received his education in the Ord Public Schools.
Arnold entered the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict from 1949 to 1953. He served aboard the USS Pickaway and the USS Renshaw. Following his discharge from the service he returned to Ord.
Arnold married Doris Dorene Rice on September 10, 1950, at Ord, Nebraska. They made their home on the farm near Ord.
In the late 1950’s Arnold and Doris moved to Wood River and Arnold worked for a time at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He then went to work as a maintainer operator for the Hall County Roads Department, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River, a lifetime member of American Legion Post #314, member of the Platt Deutsch and the Eagles.
He is survived by his children and their spouses; Elwin and Cheri Sperling of Corpus Christi, TX, Judy and Alan Weinrich of Grand Island, Chelle and Doyle Jantzi of Wood River and Jeffrey Sperling of Wood River; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchlidren; two sisters, Liz Weeth, Norma Rooney; and three brothers, Dean Sperling, Larry Sperling, and Carl Sperling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris in 1996; brother, Lou “Bud” Sperling; and sister, Lorraine Hallock.
