Barry D Schultz

October 12, 1953 — December 25, 2014

Barry D. Coach Schultz, 61 of Grand Island, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2014 at CHI St. Francis Health in Grand Island.



Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Third City Christian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Burwick Cemetery in Cairo. Visitation hours will be from 4-8 P.M. Monday, December 29, 2014 at Third City Christian Church. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date in lieu of flowers. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.



Barry Donald Schultz was born October 12, 1953 in Grand Island, Nebraska the son of Donald J. & Marion I. (Dankert) Schultz. He received his early education from District #36 and graduated from Centura High School with the class of 1971. He received his bachelors degree in Marketing & Education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1975.



He was united in marriage to Debra L. Axtell, March 22, 1975 in Broken Bow, NE. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where be began his teaching career at Northwest High School in August of 1975 teaching Business and Marketing, and was the girls basketball and golf coach. Barry retired in June of 1994. After his retirement, he owned and operated Play It Again Sports retiring in 2012 due to declining health. He was anxiously waiting for the arrival of his first grandson, who is due in January.



He was a member of Third City Christian Church of Grand Island. He had prior association with Christ Lutheran Church of Cairo and First Christian Church of Grand Island. Barry and Deb also enjoyed the fellowship of the Destiny/Cowboy Church. He was a member of DECA, Clean Community Council, Tri-City Hockey Board and served on the Northwest Little League Board. He also was the voice of Northwest Softball.



Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Deb Schultz of Grand Island; two sons and daughter-in-law, Matthew R. & Stephanie Schultz of Grand Island, Michael J. Schultz of Grand Forks, ND; his father & step mother, Don & Darlene Schultz of Grand Island; sister and brother-in-law, Roxanne and Jerry Hoffer; mother-in-law, Waunita (Dainton) Axtell; sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Shirley & Herb McMullen; brother-in-law & sister-in-law, David & Patti Axtell; step-sisters and their spouses, Carol and Chuck Gerstung, Marcia Williams, Connie and Dan Karre, Wendy and William Barg, & Nancy and Bernie Harris; numerous nieces, nephews, loving aunts and uncles, cousins, & friends.



He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Schultz; brother, Ronald Schultz; father-in-law, Lagene Axtell; & foster son, James McKnight.
