Chan Ross Komarek

Channing “Chan” Ross Komarek, 88, of Grand Island died Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society – Grand Island with family by his side. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Friday, January 19, 2024, at Apfel Funeral Home with Reverend Beverly Hieb officiating. Visitation will start an hour prior to the memorial service. Chan was born March 20, 1935, at Fairmont, NE the son of Frank and Mildred (Beranek) Komarek. He grew up in Fairmont, NE graduating from Fairmont High School. He entered the Army on April 10, 1957, and was honorably discharged on April 9, 1959. Chan was united in marriage to Mary Mynette Good on November 20, 1960, at Cozad, NE. After which the couple lived in Fairmont, NE where he was employed by Standard Oil Co. The couple also lived in York, NE and Chan became the County Weed Superintendent. He later became a State Ag Inspector. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1992.

He was a member of the Alda United Methodist Church and a 55-year member of the American Legion Post #53. His enjoyments came from being with his grandkids, watching Nebraska football, fishing, and his cat Harvey.

Those left to cherish his memory include daughters: Kimberly (James) Thompson of Grand Island and DeAnne Peek of Sherwood, Arkansas; four grandchildren Sarah Peek Hamm (Matt) and Rebekah (Aaron) Spychalski, Chandler (Kaitlyn) Thompson and Payton Thompson; great grandchildren: Channing Spychalski, Rowan Thompson, and Hannah Hänn; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Chan in death were his wife, Mary Mynette; parents, brothers: Edward and Rodney Komarek; sisters: Delores Ingles and Louise Emery; and nephew Charles Komarek.
