Charley Herndon

Hastings resident, H. Charley Herndon, 88 passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.

Services will be Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11 am at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Hastings with The Rev. Steven Peeler officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 3 to 8 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or the donors choice.

Charley was born August 21, 1926 to George D. and Agnes L. (Nichols) Herndon in Lakeland, Florida. He served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years. Charley received several Medals of Honor during his military service. He was also a security officer for the Veterans Administration for 18 years.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Hastings.

Charley enjoyed traveling extensively; he visited the lower 48 states, Mexico and Canada. He enjoyed gardening, big band music, crossword puzzles, keeping up with current events and local and national weather.

He is survived by his wife Janet of Hastings, two sons, Mike (Kay) Herndon of Casper, WY and Luis Herndon of Sacramento, CA, four daughters, Anita Herndon and Toni (Glen) Gerber all of Sacramento, CA, Beverly Denman and Ilene Butler both of Hastings, two sisters, Shirley Dixon of Pembroke, GA and Winnice (Dan) Pierce of Athens, AL, 10 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.
