Christina Powell, 103, formerly of Grand Island died Monday, January 25, 2021 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, January 29, 2021 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island with Fr. Jim Golka officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Platt Duetsche. Burial will be at 1:30 pm in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with a Rosary beginning at 7 pm.
She was born on December 14, 1917 in Hazard, NE to Daniel and Edith (Anderson) O’Neill.
She was united in marriage to John Powell on April 18, 1942.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Catholic Daughters #2227 Court Queen of Peace, past Regents Club, Chrysalis Red Hat Society and Senior Living Line Dancers. She was the third Regent of Court Queen of Peace, vice president one term for Past Regents and one term as president of Christian Mothers and taught first grade catechism for six years.
She is survived by her children, Bryan (Susie) Powell of Wood River, NE, Frank (LeeAnn) Powell of Grand Island, NE, Bernard Powell of York, NE, Rita (Ed) Kelly of Joplin, MO, Mary (Charles) Encinger of Grand Island, NE and Barbara (Allan) Allen of Lincoln, NE; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and siblings, Violet Woitaszewski and Anne Mart.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Powell, son, Daniel Powell and daughter, Veronica Miller, grandchildren, Beverly Andrews and Steve Kelly, daughter-in-law, Cathy Powell and siblings, Irene Wortman, Arthur O’Neill, Duane O’Neill, Clarence O’Neill, and Elinor Petersen.
