Clovice Elaine Hahn

Hastings resident Clovice Elaine (Christensen) Hahn, 72, of 1818 Home St. died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22, 2008 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1725 N. Crane Ave., in Hastings with Bishop Gary Snowder officiating. There will be a graveside service 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, noon to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6-9 p.m., at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home & Cremation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Hastings Symphony, the Hastings Community Theatre, the Hastings Community Foundation, the National Stroke Association, or a charity of the donor's choice. Clovice was born to Melvin C. and Gertrude (Prater) Christensen on Sept. 7, 1935 in Muncie, Kansas. She graduated as salutatorian of the Washington High School (Kansas City) class of 1953, and attended Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia) before receiving Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She married G. LeRoy Hahn on December 3, 1955 and was a devoted mother to the four children born to this union. They lived in Columbia, MO, Ames, IA, and Davis, CA before moving to Hastings in 1978. In Columbia, Clovice contributed to and was a leader in her church, 4-H, the PTA, and the League of Women Voters, and began her teaching career. In Hastings, she taught reading for several years in the public schools, and served as a special education teacher with ESU9. She also continued in various church roles, including Sunday School teacher, early morning seminary instructor, compassionate service visitor, pianist, and many others. Clovice loved music (both performing and appreciating) and reading, and greatly enjoyed traveling (including all 50 states and many foreign countries), especially when opportunities arose for extended stays (e.g., Alaska and Norway) which provided experiences beyond the usual tourist sight-seeing. Clovice was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, LeRoy; daughters and sons-in-law: Valerie Hahn and Vernon Leat of Kansas City MO, Cecile and Andrew Callahan of Hastings, and Melanie and David Warner of California City CA; one son and daughter-in-law: Steven and Sachie Hahn, of Seattle WA; eight grandchildren, Sean Callahan of Lutz FL, Paul, Dale and Grace Callahan of Hastings, Jane and Portia Hahn-Leat of Kansas City MO, and Michael and Jennifer Warner of California City CA; sisters- and brothers-in-law Vivian and John L. Smith of Tonganoxie KS, Janice and Stanley Hahn of Wichita KS, Karen and Paul Hahn of Houston TX, as well as several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
