Darwyn Bud D. Buettner, 76 of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation hours will be 2 4 P.M. Sunday at the Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Cancer Treatment Center in Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Darwyn Bud Buettner was born November 12, 1937 in Grand Island the son of Alfred & Frieda (Reher) Buettner. He was raised in rural Hall County and graduated from Grand Island Senior High with the class of 1955.
He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on December 1956 and served on various ships and stations as a radio operator until becoming a commissioned officer in 1965. He then served at various stations and ships including duty in the Arctic and Antarctic areas. He retired from military service in November of 1977 after having served as Commanding Officer of a Buoy Tender/Icebreaker out of Kodiak, Alaska, where he was awarded the Meritorious Service and Coast Guard Commendation medals. He received numerous other awards during his career including the Arctic and Antarctic Service Medals.
He was united in marriage to Barbara White on April 14, 1957 in Grand Island, NE. He and his family lived in numerous southern, eastern and western coastal states while in the service. After leaving the service he worked three years for the Nebraska Department of Labor and as Assistant Public Works Director for the City of Grand Island from February 1981 until 2008.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Platt-Duetsche Society, Eagles, Saddle Club, American Legion and Military Officer Association. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing in Alaska, Husker sports and above all spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Barbara Buettner of Grand Island, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Doug & Kathy Buettner of Wasilla, Alaska, Dave Buettner of Aurora, Colorado, Darren & Saffron Buettner of Grand Island, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Rogene Behrendsen of Grand Junction, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
