Donald H. Gloe, 82, of Wood River died Friday, November 9, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island with his family by his side. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marys Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. James Janovec will officiate. In observance of Dons wishes, cremation has taken place. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 314. Arrangements were made through Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River. Family will receive friends at St. Marys Catholic Church in Wood River on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. The evening will conclude with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Donald H. Gloe was born April 23, 1930, at Grand Island to Herman and Martha (Sick) Gloe. Dons mother died when he was quite young, and he was raised by his father, and his step-mother, Florence Gloe. He received his education in Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School. He entered the U.S. Air Force and served as a radar technician during the Korean Conflict. Don married Renee M. Curlo on February 19, 1966, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. They made their home on the family farm near Wood River. Following his retirement from farming, Don worked part-time for Thelen Grain Co. in Wood River. He was member and past board member of St. Marys Catholic Church, was active in the American Legion Post 314 of Wood River, was a 12 year member and past-president of the Fonner Park Board of Directors, served on the board of the Wood River County Club and was a member of the Lions Club. Don was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker football fan, an avid horseracing fan and enjoyed playing golf, but he especially enjoyed attending the many school and sports activities of his five granddaughters. Survivors include his wife, Renee of Wood River; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Colleen Gloe of Loveland, CO; his daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Mike Kalvoda of Grand Island; one sister, Alice Eades of Raleigh, NC; and five granddaughters, Madelyn and Audrey Gloe, and Olivia, Avery and Allison Kalvoda. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Gloe. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wood River EMTs or American Legion Post 314 of Wood River.
