Doris L. Schmierer

October 6, 1938 — May 10, 2014

Doris L. Schmierer, 75, of Central City, formerly of Shelton died Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City surrounded by loving her loving family.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Central City. Sister Mary Arie will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 P.M. in the Shelton Cemetery at Shelton, NE.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 P.M. Monday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Doris was born October 6, 1938, at Wood River to Oscar and Izetta A. (Klimper) Myers.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Ron Lonowski of Grand Island; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alan Myers of Shelton, NE and Mark and Shanien Schmierer of Central City, NE; one sister, Dolores Creason of Littleton, CO; two granddaughters, Natasha Sutliff of Lincoln, NE and Anna Schmierer of Central City; two grandsons, Dustin Sutliff of Lincoln and Garrett Schmierer of Central City; two step-grandsons, Aaron Lonowski of Omaha and Shane Lonowski and his wife Bailey of Plattsmouth, NE; and one step-great-granddaughter, Ariyana Lonowski of Omaha.

Doris grew up and received her education at District 35 School and graduated form Shelton High School in 1956.

She enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1956 until receiving her honorable discharge at the rank of Pfc in 1958.

Following her military service, she returned to the Shelton area. Doris married Willis Schmierer on June 6, 1971. They lived in Aberdeen, SD for two years then returned to the Shelton/Wood River area where Doris raised her family.

Doris worked at Baldwin Manufacturing in Kearney for 18 years and then as a CNA and PCA for over ten years. She retired from full-time work in 2001 but continued part-time within the healthcare services.

Doris was a country person. She enjoyed many different animals, with horses and dogs being her favorite. When it came to the wild, she was fond of wolves. She enjoyed sports and participated in softball. She was fond of Country and Gospel music. She enjoyed all kinds of flowers, roses and carnations being her favorites. She enjoyed watching and listening to songbirds, and especially enjoyed eagles, hawks and owls.

Doris loved to draw, paint, and work with crafts. She enjoyed playing games, doing embroidery work and reading. She especially enjoyed biographies, as well as, Indian and animal stories. She loved the time she would spend with her grandchildren and especially how they would make her laugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Diane Jeanette Myers; and a brother-in-law, Dale Creason.
