Hastings resident, Dorothy J. Schakat, 85, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings-Village. Services will be Friday, November 18, 2011 at 11 AM the All Saints Chapel, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings-Village with Pastors Paul Knott, Charles Johnson and Dale Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, NE. Visitation will be Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 9 AM to 9 PM with family present from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE and up till service time at the chapel. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Memorials may be given to the Chapels ministry at Good Samaritan Society or the Berean Bible Church both in Hastings, NE. Dorothy was born August 16, 1926 to John and Nina (Hightower) Mann in Omaha, NE. She graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, NE in 1944. She married Art Schakat on February 12, 1948 at the Bemis Park Baptist Church in Omaha, NE. They celebrated 63 years of marriage this past February. In 1961 the family moved to Hastings to help in the early beginning of the Calvary Baptist Church. Dorothy was active in various ways, she was a Sunday school teacher, playing the piano and organ, and she was a member of the Bible Camp ministry, Pioneer Girls Club and the Ladies Missionary activities. She worked as an accountant for the Nash Finch Food Company for 30 years in Hastings and Grand Island, NE, and later part time at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home and Good Samaritan Society. She is survived by her husband Art of Hastings, NE and four children, Carolyn LeBar and husband Craig of Hastings, NE, Beverly Kercher and husband Roger of Douglas, AZ, JoAnn Schakat and John Schakat and wife Jody all of Hastings, NE, six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one grandson, Jordan. For her family she leaves good memories and blessings as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
