Dorothy was born on July 13, 1946, the daughter of Herman John Carl and Christina Dorothy (Knoepful) Kruse in Grand Island at the old Lutheran hospital. She grew up and received her education, briefly attending Concordia Lutheran High School and graduating from Worms Grade School in 1960. On February 2, 1961 she was united in marriage to Melvin E. In 1965, they returned to the family farm near Worms, purchasing some land from Herman and Christina and built a home, that was their pride and joy. A special love of gardening and growing things filled the years they spent at the farm.
