Doug C. Suhrbier, 64, of Boelus, died Sunday March 17, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society – Ravenna. A memorial service will be held Friday March 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with Reverend Jeff McKearney officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Doug was born on July 25, 1954 at Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Carl & Mel (Porter) Suhrbier. He grew up in the area and attended Fort Dodge High School, and later entered the United States Army on July 27, 1974, serving until his honorable discharge on December 3, 1975. On September 27, 1970, he was baptized at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Callender, IA.
He was a self-employed construction and maintenance man, working on many houses, yards and lawn mowers over the years and also living in various cities including: Muscatine, Atalissa, Moscow, Iowa, Ocean City, Maryland, and eventually settling in Boelus, NE. Doug lived in Boelus for the last 20 years and loved helping anyone in need as well as mowing for all his neighbors in Boelus. His hobbies included fishing, working on small motors, camping and enjoying time spent with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, Doug Koosmann of West Branch, IA., daughter and son-in-law Melinda & Mike Perez of Grand Island; stepchildren, Kimberly & Tim Sebesta of Grand Island, Michelle Meyer of York, Sandra Wetzel of York, and Amanda Iske of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Dave and Jonnie Lyon of Georgia, Steve and Terry Lyon of Iowa; sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Luis Vadi of Georgia.
Preceding him in death was his mother, Mel Robbins, significant other Janis Meyer and stepson Scott Shottenkirk.
