Douglas L. Sloan, of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 10:30am at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island, Nebraska. The Rev. Jim Garfield will officiate.
Burial will follow at the Grand Island Cemetery with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and U.S. Army Honors Detail. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 15th at Apfel Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials will be donated to the Honor Flight Network.
Mr. Sloan was born on December 12, 1949 in Grand Island, Nebraska, the son of Lewis W. and Margaret (Ashworth) Sloan. The family relocated frequently, while his father served in the military. He received most of his education in Goldsboro, North Carolina, graduating in 1969. He entered the United States Army in September 1969 and was honorably discharged in September 1992. He served in both Vietnam and The Cold War.
He was united in marriage to Lois L. Feldt on October 10, 1980 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The couple returned to North Carolina and she and their family remained there while he continued to serve in the US Army. He was deployed numerous times defending our country as a parachute rigger and load master, always returning to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Upon retiring from the military, they moved to Grand Island to be near family. He continued his college education while being employed by a local furniture store. He then began employment at Island Supply Welding Company as a driver and in warehouse production.
He was immensely proud of his military career and honored to serve his country. He was also a member of The American Legion of Grand Island. He especially enjoyed yard work and loved football. His favorite teams were the Big Red and the Washington Redskins.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; two sons, Richard L. Westwood and Jeffrey A. Westwood, and a daughter, Kimberly J. Rapolla, all of Grand Island; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Patricia A. Simmons, of Mt. Airy, NC; and aunt, Jean Fisher, of Grand Island. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, his parents and his son, Stephen N. Sloan.
