Hastings resident, Dr. John "Jack" G. Yost, 82, of 3600 Osborne Dr. East, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. A Celebration of Life Reception for family and friends will be held at Lochland County Club from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, March 17, 2006. Services will be Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral Church with the Very Rev. Thomas H. White officiating. A private family burial will be held at Parkview Cemetery prior to services at the church with military rites. Visitation will be Friday; 6 PM to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from, www.brandwilson.com. Dr. Yost was born August 16, 1923 to Howard and Syble (Gantt) Yost in North Platte, NE. He graduated from the Grand Island High School, he then graduated from Doane College and he graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School. He served his residency at Cook County Hospital, in Brooklyn, New York. He married June A. Goodman, July 1, 1949; she died May 27, 2004. He served in the Navy from June 29, 1953 to January 8, 1955 during the Korean War as a M.A.S.H. surgeon. Dr. Yost was instrumental in starting the Hastings Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Specialists, P.C. in Hastings, NE he was an orthopedic surgeon for more then 40 years. After retirement, he served as a consultant through 1996. For over 30 years Dr. Yost volunteered his time as the team physician to injured athletes at Hastings College. When a new training room was built several years ago at Hastings College it was named the Dr. Jack Yost Training Room. He was also inducted into the college's athletic hall of fame and Pro Rege Society. In March he traveled with his family to Seattle, to receive the 2005 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award presented to him by the American Quarter Horse Association. He became a horse owner for the first time in 1960 and has owned dozens of quarter horses. He also has bred quarter horses, and thoroughbred race horses. Dr. Yost and a friend Darrel Stromer were instrumental in bringing quarter horse racing to Hastings, NE at Queen City Downs. He also co-founded the Saddle-Up Handicapped Riding Club in Hastings, NE a program to help children with physical disabilities through horseback riding. He was a member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral Church, Hastings, NE., Hastings College Athletics, the Adams County Fairfest Board, the Hastings Planning and Zoning Commission, he founded and was past president of the Nebraska Quarter Horse Racing Association, past president of the Nebraska Quarter Horse Association, the Hastings Rotary Club, and Hastings Elks Lodge, He is survived by, 3 daughters, Susan Kawmy, Great Falls, VA, Jill Creveling, of Urbandale, IA, and Nancy Jones of Ponca City, OK, 1 son, Dr. John "Jay" G. Yost Jr. of Girard, KS, 12 grandchildren and 1 brother Dr. Howard Yost of Mission Hills, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife June. Memorials may be given to the June Yost Nursing Scholarship, or the Saddle Up Handicapped Riding Club.
