Erhart Jim Arndt, 91, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island. Memorial service will be 2:00 pm Monday, April 23, 2018, at Resurrection Catholic Church. Visitation gathering with family will be 4-7 pm Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Union Cemetery in Mandan, North Dakota. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
Erhart was born on May 24, 1926, in Garrison, ND to Jacob and Martha (Abel) Arndt. He grew up in Bismack, ND.
In 1947, he met the love of his life, and on September 18, 1952, married Dorothy Kastner at Garrison, ND. After which the couple lived in Garrison and moved to Grand Island in 1961. Erhart worked for the Bureau of Reclamation for 35 and a half years. Upon retiring he worked part-time at Hermans Plumbing. In 2011, they had celebrated 60 years of marriage when Dorothy died in 2012.
Erhart entered the United States Army on March 1, 1945, serving during the World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1946.
He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, the Eagles Club, and had been a past Nebraska State president. During his presidential year, he raised money for Boys Town in Grand Island. Erhart enjoyed wood working, hunting, fishing, bowling, traveling, working on cars, and spending time with family including children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Survivors of the family include children: Ronald Arndt of Grand Island, Paul (Cindy) Arndt of Alda, NE, Daniel (Lisa) Arndt of Des Moines, IA, Kathleen (Tom) Martin of Grimes, IA, Carolyn (Von) Lutz of Grand Island, Kenneth (Michelle) Arndt of Austin, TX, Gary (Tracy) Arndt of Grand Island; grandchildren: Ashley (Carl) Smith, Casey (Amanda) Arndt, Izabella Arndt, Thomas Martin, Sarah (Michael) Benavides, Andrew (Ashley) Marquez, Aaron (Taylor) Marquez, Jacob (Gabrielle) Arndt, Alexander (Lacey) Arndt, Katelin Arndt; 12 great grandchildren; sisters: Edna Mahowald of Bismark, ND, Ethel Sayler of Great Falls, MT, sister-in-law: Delores Bell of Lisbon, ND; brother-in-law: Robert (Wanda) Kastner of Garrison, ND.
Erhart was preceded in death by: wife: Dorothy; infant daughter: Launa; great-granddaughter: Delilah Smith; brother: Edward Arndt; sister: Elsie Hagge; and brother-in-law: Elmer Kastner.
