Evelyn Ann Layher

Evelyn Ann Layher, 84 of Grand Island, died Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home.



Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Apfel Funeral Home, Grand Island, with Chaplain Bill Noer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island. Visitation hours will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the funeral home. Family requests casual attire. Memorials are suggested to Central Nebraska Humane Society. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Evelyn A. Layher was born March 12, 1934 at Gentry, Missouri the daughter of Merle & Helen (Boltz) Henry. She grew up in Hastings, Nebraska where she received her education, graduating from Hastings High School with the Class of 1952.



She was united in marriage to Elmer Lee Layher, December 5, 1952, before he left to serve his county during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return they made their home between Hastings and Grand Island and in 1966 they moved to Grand Island, NE.



She was employed by Skagway North, (the original) where she managed the Snack Bar from 1968 until 1990.



She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed painting ceramics, caring for the seasonal flowers that adorned her backyard & front porch and the company of her pets.



Those left to cherish her memory include, two daughters and their husbands, Joni & Dale Scheibe of St. Paul and Cindi & Ray Lindley of Grand Island, two grandsons, Kris Scheibe and Tony Lindley, two granddaughters, Jamie Scheibe & Sara Herz, five great grandchildren, Avah Scheibe, Reese Ellis, Graycn Ellis, Stella Herz & Cooper Scheibe, brother & sister-in-law, Ken and Marcia Henry, of Cheyenne, WY, sister-in-law, Carolyn Henry of North Platte, NE.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Layher, brother, Robert Henry, sister, Mary Alice Petr; her parents, Merle and Helen Henry, and nephew, Mark Petr.
