F. Sidney Sid White, 96 of Grand Island, died Sunday, February 14, 2016 at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island.
Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2016, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Grand Island with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Inurnment of the ashes will be in St. Stephens Columbarium. There will be no visitation. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Floyd Sidney White was born, January 18, 1920 in Grand Island the son of Floyd & Anna (Rasmussen) White. He attended Wasmer Grade School, Barr Junior High where he played football and basketball. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High with the class of 1938. He participated in not only in football but track and basketball. He represented Grand Island Senior High at the first Hi-Y Conference in Berea, Kentucky and later became the local president and state president. Sid was editor of the The Islander paper. He graduated from Hastings College in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and minor in English and Journalism. While at Hastings College he played football, basketball and tennis. He entered the United States Navy January 1943 and was commissioned Ensign. He served during WWII where he received amphibious training in Maryland, and hit Normandy beach, on D Day at Normandy by commanding an LCT ship with four Sherman tanks aboard. Needless to say it was a memorable day in his life. He was honorably discharged in December 1946 and made his home in Hastings.
He was united in marriage to Helene Burchess in 1947 in Hastings, NE. He was associated with Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas in the land lease department and later obtained his real estate license and brokers certificate.
He enjoyed playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles, traveling and being with friends. His macular degeneration didnt deter him from playing golf with seniors into his 80s.
He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge, Shrine Bodies, Hastings Kiwanis Club where he was a secretary for three years, Board of Directors, past president and Board of Directors, Hastings College Alumi Association. Vestryman at St. Marks Pro Cathedral for seven years, secretary at Lochland Country Club, Elks Club, served as County Supervisor for two terms, American Legion Baseball Committee, Saddle Club, St. Paul Country Club.
Those left to cherish his memory include three sons, Steven (Lonna) White of Tulsa, Oklahoma, James (Tiffany) White of Lincoln, Nebraska, Thomas (Karen) White of Lincoln, NE, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren along with a special companion, Myrna Rosenberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents. 02
