Florence (Thompson) Windfield, 95, of Grand Island died Friday, May 24, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society – Grand Island.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 29 at the United Methodist Church in Wood River. The Rev. Trudy Hanke will officiate. There will be no visitation. A private family burial service will take place later at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
Florence was born March 5, 1924, on the family farm southwest of Grand Island to Carl and Clara (Moeller) Becker. She attended District 23 rural school and graduated from Alda High School in 1942. Upon her graduation from high school, she worked at the Woolworth Company store and then as a clerk at the Ordnance Plant.
In 1943, she married Robert Thompson at Marysville, Kansas. They farmed north of Wood River all of their married life. In addition to farming, Robert had a trucking business and transported cattle to Omaha for many years until his health failed him with Parkinson’s disease. He died in 1993. They raised three sons, Jim and Craig, twins born in 1946 and Doug born in 1948. After her family was grown, she worked as a secretary at the Hall County extension Office in Grand Island for 12 years.
In 1999, she married Lloyd (Bud) Windfield and at that time she and Lloyd moved to Grand Island.
She loved playing cards and belonged to several card clubs. She and Robert took many trips with their good friends over the years. She and her second husband, Lloyd (Bud) enjoyed going to dances and traveling to see kids and grandkids.
Florence was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a 50+ member of the United Methodist Church in Wood River. She was a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star of Wood River.
She enjoyed needlework and made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Jim Thompson of Ralston, NE; daughter-in-law, Dianne Thompson of Wood River in addition to seven grandchildren from her first marriage to Robert; Matt, Ann, Mark, Dan, Abbie, Joe, Curtis and their spouses. In addition to this union, she has seven great-grandchildren. With her marriage to Lloyd, she is survived by stepchildren; Susie, Tom (Cindy) and Sherry (wife of Gary, deceased in 2016) and their grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first, husband Robert; sons Craig and Doug; granddaughter, Jennifer; her second husband, Lloyd; and his son, Gary Windfield.
Memorials are suggested to the family to be decided at a later date.
