Fred H. Nickel, 80 of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 24, 2016 at CHI St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at Cairo Baptist Church, Cairo, Nebraska with the Rev. Jack Boling officiating. Inurnment will be in Morlan Township Cemetery, near Palco, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to Riverside Lodge, Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Fred H. Nickel was born, August 7, 1935 at Greenwich, Connecticut the son of Henry Fred & Elfreda (Schmidt) Nickel. He grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. He entered the United States Air Force in 1954 and served at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas. He was honorably discharged in 1957. He was united in marriage to Mary Margaret Germany in 1957 in Wichita, Kansas. The couple made their home in Newton, Kansas and New York where he was a Speech Therapist He retired in Nebraska.
He was an avid painter and enjoyed playing cards and traveling.
Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, David Nickel of Cairo, NE, Daniel Nickel of Newton, KS, one daughter, Mary Hall of Phoenix, AZ, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, sisters, Norma Tannone and Helen Hornberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Margaret and son, Mike.
