Former Hastings resident, Fredrick A. Kreinheder, 96, passed away Monday, July 31, 2017 in Minnesota.
Services will be Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11 am at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Larry Harvey officiating. . Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings with military rites by the Hastings Veterans Assoc. Visitation will be Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Memorials are preferred to the American Legion, Boys Town or First Baptist Church of Hastings.
Fred was born on July 7, 1921, in Adams County, Nebraska to John and Ella Kreinheder. He grew up in Nebraska, and graduated from Hastings High School in 1939. After graduating from high school, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, returning home from his duty in December 1945. Fred then became employed at the Boys Training School in Kearny, Nebraska. Fred soon left the school and began work in Washington D.C. for the federal government from 1948-1972 as a detective and captain in investigations. On June 18, 1964 he married Catherine Marchetti. They lived in Arlington, VA until 1980 when Fred retired and they moved to Columbia, Missouri. After retiring from the federal government, Fred and his family enjoyed organic gardening, selling their goods at local farmers markets. In 2000 Fred and Catherine moved to Minnesota to be closer to their daughter, Cherie. On December 25, 2012 Fred lost the love of his life, Catherine. Fred was known for his work ethic, generosity and willingness to help others. He was an active member of the American Legion.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Cherie Smith (husband Michael) of Zumbro Falls, MN, and five grandchildren; Ivy, William, Sally, Joseph and Lilly.
He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine, parents; sister, Marie and brother, Paul.
