Gary “Sully” Sullivan, 80, went to dance with the angels on Thursday March 10, 2022.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday March 16th at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Donald Buhrman presiding. Concelebrants will be Rev. Charles Torpey and Rev. Mark Maresh. Cremation will take place following the funeral service. Gary’s cremains will be inurned in the Grand Island City Cemetery columbarium.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday March 15th at St. Leo’s Catholic Church concluding with a 7:00 p.m. wake service. Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.
Gary Kevin Sullivan was born April 19, 1941, on a small farm west of Hartington, Nebraska to Floyd P. and Clara F. (Miller) Sullivan. He was a farmer at heart his whole life. Gary was in the last class to graduate from Concord High School in 1958. He continued his education at Wayne State College earning his bachelor’s degree in 1964 and master’s degree in 1967.
Gary married Myrna Schwiesow on June 5, 1965, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca, NE. He taught industrial education and driver’s education in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa for nine years. Gary began working at House of Kitchens in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1974.
In 1981, he moved to Grand Island and partnered with Tom Grooms and Gary Catlett in the House of Lights/Kitchen Gallery until 2004. The store was awarded Grand Island’s Small Business of the Year in 1995. Gary continued in the custom countertop business with Brent Anderson until retirement in 2013.
Gary was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. In past years, he served as Grand Knight and District Deputy in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a past member of Riverside Golf Club (where he had two holes-in-one), the Platt Duetsche, and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife Myrna Sullivan of Grand Island; two sons, Kevin Sullivan and fiance’ Debra Haley along with her children, Lauren and Jackson of Omaha, NE and Michael Sullivan and wife Amy of Olathe, KS; two grandchildren, Claire and Max Sullivan; sister, Beverly Ziegenbein of Salina, KS; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and Kay Schwiesow of Port Angeles, WA, Steve and Debbie Schwiesow of Council Bluffs, IA, Susan and Ross Udey of Blair, NE, Rick Schwiesow of Berthoud, CO, Landy and Bianca Schwiesow of St. Louis, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; and best friend, Leo Pat Engel of South Sioux City, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, LC Norman and Lillian Sullivan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, LaRae and Bob Smith, Neal Smith, Jim Ziegenbein, and Doug Schwiesow.
