George A. Demary

March 19, 1932 — July 4, 2018

George A. DeMary 86, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.



Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 7th at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kelly Karges will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the United Veteran’s Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honors Team.



Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 PM Friday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.



George Arthur DeMary was born March 19, 1932, near St. Paul, Nebraska to Charles A. and Esther H. (Fuller) DeMary. He grew up and received his education in St. Paul, graduating from St. Paul High School with the Class of 1950.



George entered the U.S. Army on November 5, 1952 serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant First Class in October of 1954.



George married Betty Louise Wolf on December 26, 1954, at Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island. George worked as a small engine mechanic for Reitan’s and then many years as a shop supervisor for the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1987.



He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion and VFW.

His hobbies included fishing and camping when his family was young, pheasant and deer hunting, bowling and gardening. George was also a huge Huskers fan.



Survivors of the immediate family include, four daughters, Teresa K. “Terry” Avery of Grand Island; Patricia J. “Patty” (Jerry) Dimmitt of Wood River; Marcia (John) Newman of Lincoln; Tamra S. “Tami” (Rick) Geist of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren and spouses; Nathan and Melissa Avery, Eric and Maran Avery, Andrea and Benjamin Robles, Todd and Brookly Dimmitt, Tammie and Aaron Wobig, Jasen and Mandy Dimmitt, Elizabeth Kramer, Hannah and Shelby Prusia, Sarah Geist, and Dustin and Falisha Geist; 16 great-grandchildren, Brianna, Coralynn, Raymond, Marco, Catalina, Austin, Zack, Ty, Courtney, Madisen, Keelie, Jayden, Jaxson, Jarren, Owen and Cole; four brothers, Dick DeMary, Paul F. DeMary, Max B. DeMary and David A. DeMary; and three sisters, Alberta G. Fisher, Betty Ann P. Jelinek and Maxine B. White.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; one brother, Charles “Sonny” DeMary; and two sisters, Elnora Tschudy and Alice Grim.
