Harold W. Parlin, 93, of Wood River, Ne., died Friday, Sept. 25, 2015 at his home in Wood River.
Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., at St. Marys Catholic Church in Wood River with Rev. Jorge Canela officiating. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island, Ne.
Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 28 from 5-7 p.m. at St. Marys Church. Memorials are suggested to the family. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Harold Wesley Parlin was born on Nov. 14, 1921 to William and Esther (Cornell) Parlin in Highmore, S.D. He received his education in Highmore and after the death of his mother at the age of 37, he helped to raise his siblings.
He married Phyllis (Rezac) Parlin at St. Marys Church in Highmore April 16, 1945.
The couple made their home in Hyde County, S.D., with Harold working as a carpenter and later as a farm hand south of Holabird, S.D. He was hired as a ranch hand by Clayton Jennings, owner of Hyland Angus Ranch in Highmore in March of 1956. The Hyland Angus Ranch was the first to inseminate beef cattle by the volume. During the years on the Hyland Angus Ranch their reputation as a top Angus cattle breeder grew worldwide.
In 1964 Ankony Farm of New York purchased the Clayton Jennings Hyland Angus Ranch and Harold continued with the cattle operation and later became the manager of the Highmore ranch. In 1975 the Ankony ranch was sold once again and Harold and Phyllis moved in 1977 to Grand Island, Ne., and worked for Quirk Land and Cattle Company residing at the Taylor Ranch.
Harold retired in 1990 and they moved to Alda, Ne., then moving to Wood River, Ne. in 2003. During his retirement years Harold enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening and outdoor work, and his beloved baseball games on TV.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Mary Parlin of Wood River, and Larry and Wanda Parlin of Omaha; three grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Clyde Hermann of Wood River, and their children, Dylan, Kaitlyn and Tanner; Darren and Bobbi Parlin of Wood River and their children, Haley, Abby and Faith; and Lance and Crystal Parlin of Wood River and their children, Jaxon, Cadin and Collin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; four brothers, Les Parlin, Delmer Parlin, Darrel Parlin and William Parlin Jr.; and a sister, Darlene Wages.
