Helen D. Elrod, 89 of Grand Island, died Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Bickford Cottage in Grand Island. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Bill Pavuk will be officiating. Interment will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to be given in care of the Family. Helen was born September 30, 1923 in Grand Island, Nebraska to George and Elise (Buckow) Niemoth. She grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska She was united in marriage to Donald Elrod on June 8, 1947 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island Helen was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included traveling, dancing, cards pitch, reading, crossword puzzles Survivors of the immediate family include: Sister - Betty Olson (Niemoth) of Lincoln, NE and her husband Vic Olson, Sister Hazel Hust of Chicago, IL., Daughter - Mary Jo Wicht (Elrod) of Kearney, NE & her husband Edward Wicht, Son James Alan Elrod of Grand Island and his wife, Janice Koenig-Elrod, Grandchildren Stacy Wicht of Lincoln, NE, Bryan Elrod of Sterling, Colorado, Trisha Minor (Wicht) of Lincoln, NE and her husband Roger Spellman, Jennifer Franssen (Wicht) of Kearney, NE and her husband Nicholas Franssen, Matthew Wicht of Pleasanton, NE and Sara Elrod of Brooklyn, New York, Great Grandchildren Jamie Elrod of Grand Island, NE, Timothy Minor of Lincoln, NE and Elizabeth Spellman of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, A. Donald Elrod and a special friend, Bernard Crist.
