Hastings resident, Herbert E. Haefeker, 90 passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Perkins Pavilion, Hastings-Village.
Services will be Monday, December 16, 2013 at 11 am at the Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Lee Wigert officiating with military rites. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Arrangements by the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings, NE.
A memorial will be established.
Herbert was born October 18, 1923 to Berthold and Emma Alma (Webber) Haefeker in Denaud, Florida. He grew up many places but spent his last years in Hastings. He served in the United States Army Corp during WWII from February 23, 1943 to December 1, 1945 reenlisting in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War from July 27, 1950 to July 31, 1965. Herbert was a lightweight wrestling champion and had won the division of Fifth Air Force Wrestling Champion in 1949.
He married Agnes (Bonnie) Manning in 1952, to this union was born two sons Joe Allen and Michael Lee Haefeker. They divorced October 1965. He later met Donna Elaine (Rose) White and they married October 15, 1970 in Red Cloud, NE. To this union he gained four children, Raylene, Henry, James and Edward. Tamara was born to the union January 15, 1971.
Herbert worked for the Hastings Utilities and retired from Hastings Industrial Irrigation in 1998.
He was a faithful member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings. He was also a member of Parents without Partners, Fraternal Order of Eagles #592, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1346, American Legion Post #11, Hastings Archery Club, Skylark Radio Airplanes and the Fraternal Order Hastings Campers Club holding the office of Wagon Master.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, archery, flying radio controlled airplanes and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Joe Allen, brother, Walter Ray Horning, four sisters, Eva Lucille Paulson, Mary Helen Oschner, Mildred Maxine Edelmann and Julia Alma Epkes.
Left to treasure his memory are, his wife Donna of Hastings, two daughters, Tamara Horner, Omaha, Raylene (Michael) Weber, Plattsmouth, NE, four sons, Michael L. Haefeker, Grand Bay, AL, Henry (Sally) White, Hastings, James (Stephanie) White, Springtown, TX and Edward (Sandi) White, Fremont, NE, 23 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren,
