Hastings resident, Herbert J. Shottenkirk, 78, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.



Services will be Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 at 10am at the First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Military rites will follow the service at the church. Visitation will be Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 from 3 pm to 7 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Burial will be at 3:30 pm at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice, NE.



Memorials may be given to American Heart Association or First St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Hastings.



Herbert was born April 1, 1939 to James and Sarah (Isaac) Shottenkirk in Beatrice, NE.



He married Joanne K. Knaak on April 3, 1965 in Beatrice. They moved to Hastings after their daughter was born. He then worked for Sears and Roebuck, Safeway and then was hired by the Hastings Police Department. He was a police officer for almost 26 years in the Hastings community.



He was a member of First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Coffee Group at Burger King that met every morning, a Card Group at the Eagles in the afternoons he enjoyed playing Pitch, and Hearts.



He is survived by Daughter, Wendy (Greg) Gursey Anchorage, AK, Son, Terry (Wei Wei) Shottenkirk, Ft Worth, TX, 4 grandchildren; Ryan Gursey, Ashton Shottenkirk, Ethan Shottenkirk, Sarah Shottenkirk, Close family friend; Heidi (Hal) Smith, and their children Mariah Walker, Peyton Smith, and Brady Smith, Hastings,NE and numerous nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joanne, and sister, Darlene (Vern) Walker.
