Hubert "Gene" Gustafson

Hubert “Gene” Gustafson, 83, of Grand Island died Wednesday August 1, 2018 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island with his family by his side.



Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Reverend Lisa Ewoldt officiating. Interment will follow at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday August 5, 2018 at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to the family for designation at a later time.

Gene was born July 14, 1935 at Edgar, Nebraska, the son of Orville and Pearletta (Elifritz) Gustafson. He grew up in Edgar, receiving his education from Edgar High School, graduating in the class of 1953. He then entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged, after which he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, graduating in 1965.



On October 18, 1959, Gene was united in marriage to Rosalie Swedlund in Hansen, Nebraska. For the past 51 years, the couple made Grand Island their home, where Gene was employed with State Farm as a claims specialist.



Gene was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island where he served as a Deacon and an Elder and also as a Sunday school teacher. He was also a member and served as a Potentate for the Masonic Lodge, member of the Tehama Shrine and the Eastern Star. Gene was an avid Husker fan and especially a big fan of the Green Bay Packers.



Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Rosalie; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki & Dave Buckley of Omaha; a son, Jim Gustafson of Grand Island; two grandchildren, Nicole Hurt and Cassie (Nick) Gordon all of Omaha; one great-grandchild, Tysen Sunderman of Omaha; one grand-puppy, Miah; and a sister, Barbara Williams of Lodi, CA.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Pearletta.
