James "Jim" New

James Jim New, 73, of Grand Island, died Saturday, June 24, 2017, at CHI St. Francis Medical Center. A celebration of life memorial service will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Burial will be at a later time. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family. Jim was born on December 23, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, NE, to Charles and Julia (Klein) New. He grew up in Cedar Rapids. He attended St. Anthony Elementary, Cedar Rapids High, and Colorado School of Mines. He was united in marriage to Nina Scarlett in 1965. They had two children, Judith and James.



Jim was a lifetime member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching NASCAR and football, and liked fast cars. Jim was a huge gun enthusiast, winning many trophies. He passed this enjoyment on to his children.



Survivors include children: Judy (John) McCloskey of Pasco, WA, Jim M. New of Columbus, NE; three grandchildren: Eric Johnson of Albion, NE, Brittany Ellenwood of Columbus, NE, Morgan New of Columbus, NE; sisters: Doris Kraus and Bernice Wiese of Grand Island; and many loving nieces and nephews.
