Janice A. Oliver, 89 of Shelton, died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at her home in Shelton. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Shelton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melody Adams officiating. Burial will be in Shelton cemetery. Visitation hours will be 6:00 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 013 at Shelton United Methodist Church, Shelton. Memorials are suggested to Tehama Shrine Transportation Committee or Shelton United Methodist Church. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Janice A. Oliver was born, June 6, 1924 at Howells, Nebraska the daughter of Emil & Anna (Dirkschneider) Matejka. Janice went to school in Howells and later moved to Dodge, Nebraska where she completed her high school years, graduating from Dodge High School at the age of 16. She moved to Montana to work at a newspaper returning to the area where she went to work for the Kearney Hub. She was briefly married to Ed Matte and to this union a daughter, Patricia was born. The couple traveled while he served in the Armed Forces. Janice later moved back to Dodge to live with her parents. She married Bob Oliver, September 10, 1952 at North Platte, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the farm with Bobs parents, later moving to a home in Shelton and finally moving west of Shelton where they would spend most of their married life, farming and raising livestock. To this union a daughter, Jody was born. She also spent a few years working at the Shelton Clipper along with helping to do anything she could on the farm. She was a member of Shelton United Methodist Church, where she was the church organist for the weekly church services as well as weddings, funerals, Christmas Programs, Cantatas and playing for weekly services at the Gibbon Nursing Home. She also was a member of the Methodist Women, Joy Circle. She was community minded and belonged to the Shelton Legion Auxiliary, the 40 & 8 organizations in Kearney, past member of Our Nite Out extension Club, Dandy Dollies, Rebekkahs, MADD and Flying Farmers. While being members of the Flying Farmers, she was the newsletter editor, Woman of the Year, Hospitality Award Winner and Queen twice. Through his organization, Bob & Janice travel extensively and enjoy the best years of their lives. She also earned her Land It Certificate so she could land the plane on her own if needed. She donated gallons of blood over years to the American Red Cross, received the AkSarBen Good Neighbor Award and the Sunshine Award. She gave herself freely to anyone who needed her help. The joy in Janices life came from her family, friends, music and being able to help others and be needed. Survivors include two daughters & sons in law, Jody & Kent Fletcher of Shelton, Nebraska, Patricia & Vernon Bredthauer of Wood River, seven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and a sister, Elaine Musil of Shelton.
