Joanne Meinke

Joanne Meinke, age 92, passed away on Thursday October 6 at Howard County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at Apfel Funeral Home – Grand Island at 11:00 AM on Tuesday October 11. Joanne has requested no visitation or viewing. Interment will follow the service at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Joanne was born on March 18, 1930, to Lee and Ethel (Williams) Timmons, near Horace, NE. She attended rural school and was a 1947 graduate of Scotia High School.

Soon after graduation she came to Grand Island where she met Ervin Meinke and they were married on August 23, 1949, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. They had one son, Terry, and a daughter, Sheryl.

Joanne was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in junior and senior high school. She then worked at Walnut Jr. High School for 20 years and retired in 1988. Joanne enjoyed her family and their trips to many states. She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the C.F.W. Auxillary, and was a past member of the Platte Deutsch. She had resided at the Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul since July of 2018.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband on August 31, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Darrell and Marvin of Scotia and James Timmons of Burwell; and sister: Lois Graff of Greeley, NE.

Joanne is survived by her son: Terry Meinke and his long-time companion and her family Virgie Hoselton of Grand Island; daughter and son in law: Sheryl (Alan) Kuszak of St. Paul; and one grandson: Andrew Lee Kuszak of Grand Island.
