Hastings resident, John Charles Spencer, 91, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019 with family by his side at Perkins Pavillion, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings – Village.
Services will be Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 10:30 am at All Saints Chapel, Good Samaritan Society with Reverend Kelly Karges, officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings from 11-4PM and one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in the Blue Valley Cemetery, Ayr, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings is in care of the family.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the American Kidney Foundation.
John was born December 19, 1927 to Harry S. and Ann (Lawson) Spencer in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1946. He married Shirley Woodworth on November 19, 1950 at the First Christian Church, Hastings. They were blessed with three children. John was a bookkeeper for several business’s including, Hastings Battery and Electric, Spady Motors and Cash Wa Distributors.
John enjoyed puttering around his garage, doing most of the household repairs. In his early years before colored television he repaired tv’s as a second job. He was an avid Husker fan and always enjoyed being with family. Once a month he met with classmates of 1946 and visited about school memories.
He attended the Doniphan United Methodist Church, Doniphan. John served on the District #60 school board as secretary. He was also a deacon for several years at the First Christian Church, Hastings.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley of Hastings, three children, Deb (Gerry) Hemberger of Juniata, Beckie Potts of Grand Island, and John (Beckie) Spencer of Grand Island, six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, one brother George Spencer of Hastings and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Chad Spencer, three sisters, Florence Saathoff, Nellie Swanson and Eunice Jordan, one brother, Harry Spencer Jr and several in laws.
