John Steckmyer

February 17, 1921 — January 31, 2016

John R. Steckmyer, 94, of Grand Island went to be with the Lord on January 31, 2016, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center. He was known as a steadfast Christian, family-man and friend.

John was born on February 17, 1921 in Grand Island, to John A. and Maude (Thayer) Steckmyer. A lifelong resident of Grand Island, John first served his country in the United States Army--Infantry, in Central Europe between 1944 & 1946. He served again in 1950 & 51 in Korea. After a 44 year career, John retired as Plant Engineer from Rainbo Bread. In the 1960s & 70s, John was active in swimming activities and a Red Cross instructor for Skin & Scuba Diving. He was a member of the First Christian Church for over 50 years.

John married Wanda Simpson on September 21, 1950 in Fremont. She preceded him in death in 1999. Previously he had been married to Ines Warren.

John is survived by his longtime companion Frances Eschliman; children, Sharon Schuett, Mike Steckmyer, Pat Grau, Daniel (Reggie) Steckmyer; 2 grandsons; 4 step grand-daughters; and 13 great-grand-children. He is also survived by brother Jean (Joyce) Steckmyer and sister Shirley Gleason. John was preceded in death by brother Gerald Steckmyer and granddaughter Tammy Schuett.

Johns Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11 am March 12th at the First Christian Church. The family will receive visitors prior to the service, beginning at 10 am. Cremation has occurred; burial will be private.

Flowers for Johns services are being provided by his children. Memorials to the First Christian Church are suggested in lieu of flowers. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.
