Joseph F. Liess, 87, of Grand Island died August 24, 2024, at CHI St. Francis. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor April Wegehaupt officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. Online condolences may be directed to www.apfelfuneralhome.com.
Joseph was born on September 11, 1936, in McCook, NE to Gilbert B. and Lola C. (Fritsch) Liess. The family moved to Wood River in 1942 where he attend school and graduated from Wood River High School in 1954. He entered the United States Marines on October 14, 1954. He was honorably discharged due to his mother’s illness.
On September 2, 1959, Joseph was united in marriage to Loraine Winfrey in Council Bluffs, IA. After which the couple lived in Wood River and Grand Island. Joseph worked at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, Hoppe/Mead Lumber, and after retiring was a people greeter at the North Walmart until 2017.
Joseph was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing football and baseball in high school. Later he played softball for Hoppe Lumber. He enjoyed the horse races, Bingo, and traveling.
Those left to cherish his memory are children: Mark Liess and Cathy (Nick) Dubois both of Grand Island; grandchildren: Aaron (Laura) Liess, Kevin (Chelsey) Liess, Paige (Blake) Saltzgaber, Nathan Dubois, Rochelle (William) Henry, Joe Dubois, and Megan Dubois; 14 great grandchildren; siblings: Paul (Sue) Liess of Lincoln, Mary Ellen Merithew of Grand Island, Charles (Nancy) Liess of Sidney, Linda Martin, Elaine Rauch both of Grand Island; and brother-in-law, Jim Kinney of Greeley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loraine in 2020; great grandchildren: Caleb and Levi Liess; and brothers: Ed and Ken Liess; daughter-in-law, Mary Liess.
