Laura M. Ahrens, 96, of Grand Island, died Friday, August 23, 2013 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Reverend Bob Rhodes will be officiating. Interment will be at Westlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 7 P.M. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Laura was born June 3, 1917 in Loup County, Nebraska to Guy and Elva (Howard) Hyde. She received her education from Grand Island Public Schools, graduating in 1935. She was united in marriage to Walter Ahrens on July 26, 1939 in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was employed by Kaufman Department Store and Tiny Tot Manor Day Care. Her hobbies included playing cards, ceramics, crafts, and sewing. She was an excellent cook. Her greatest enjoyment in life was her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Platte-Duetsche, and Saddle Club. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Janis Ahrens of Houston, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Ron Bond of Grand Island; sister, Thelma Engel of Washington; grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Rich Morris of Austin, Texas, Courtney Ahrens of Houston, Texas, Danielle and Clint Everts of Houston, TX, Mike and Tracy Bond of Peoria, Illinois; and 6 great-grandchildren, Josh, Noah, Kate, Brady, William, and Elle. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; son, Michael Ahrens; grandson, Matthew Bond; 2 sisters; and 1 brother.
