Former Hastings resident, Lawrence J. Haake, 95, of Fairbury, NE died Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, NE.
Services will be Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 10 am at First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings, with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Visitation will be Tuesday January 26, 2016 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings. Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings is in charge of the arrangements. Lawrence was born December 16, 1920 in his parents farmhouse in Helvey, NE, to Henry and Elenora (Doehring) Haake. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church, Daykin, NE. He graduated from Fairbury High School in 1939. In 1940 he was drafted into the United States Army and served for one year. August 13 1945 he married Bessie Jean Cline in Mankato, KS. The couple was blessed with four children, Jeannie Louise, Donnie Rae, Shellie Ann and Lawrence John II. He and his wife lived with her mother in Edgar, NE and he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until retirement in 1981. They built a house in Hastings, NE and were residents for over 50 years.
He was a member of First St. Pauls Lutheran Church for over 50 years where he served on the finance committee and was in the Sr. Fellowship club and attended many church gatherings. After retirement he enjoyed traveling and had seen all 50 states many Canadian Providences and Mexico. He was also a member of the American Legion and Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.
He is survived by his wife Bessie of Fairbury, his children, Donnie Aulgur and husband Terry of Rocky Mount, MO, Shellie Huismann of Omaha, Lawrence Haake II and wife Carrie of Plymouth, NE, 8 grandchildren, Jeannie Rousselo, Justin Piel, Terri Blunk, Matthew Huismann, Suzie Mitchell, Nitacia Haake, Lawrence Haake III and Tyler Haake, and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by, his parents, his daughter, Jeannie Haake, one grandson, Jarette Piel, 3 brothers, Emery, Leon and Andrew Haake, and 2 sisters, Edna Schultis and Galdys Haake.
