Leonard E. Sloan, 92, of Grand Island, NE died on Monday, February 24, 2025 at The Cedars on Broadwell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 28, 2025 at Apfel Funeral Home with Fr. Vijumon Choorackal officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, February 27th at Apfel Funeral Home.
Leonard E. was born on September 13, 1932, in Conata, SD to Walter and Mildred (Armstrong) Sloan. He graduated from Cairo High School in 1950 after which he entered the United States Navy on August 29, 1950. He was honorably discharged on July 12, 1953.
On April 27, 1954, Leonard was united in marriage to Janice Deuel in Omaha. The couple lived in Omaha and later moved to Grand Island in 1958 where he started working at the meat packing plant. In 1960 he began working for the Grand Island Fire Department for 20 plus years. He also worked at Brekely Pumps. Then he became communications director for the Red Cross and volunteered after he retired.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking and playing poker and watching baseball and Husker Football. He also was a member of the VFW and helped with Legion baseball.
Leonard is survived by children: Daniel Sloan of Grand Island, NE, Donald (Belinda) Sloan of Patterson, LA, David Sloan of VA, Deborah (Brian) Gray of Gillette, WY; 23 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren; siblings: Ray Sloan of Vermillion, SD, Joyce Munson of Norfolk, NE, Dick Sloan of Anchorage, AK, Gene Sloan of CT; sister-in-law, Judy (Gary) Tank of Grand Island; and daughter-in-law, Noaoma Sloan of Glendale, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice; daughter, Lennie Sloan; son, Dennis Sloan; granddaughter, Amanda Gray; siblings: Jim Sloan, Audrey (Elwin) Nitz, Tom Sloan; brother-in-law, Don Munson; and sisters-in-law: Sue Sloan, Sharon Sloan, and Pat Sloan.
