Lois M. Schmitt

Lois M. Schmitt, 84, of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at CHI Health St. Francis, Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 am on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Apfel Funeral Home, 1123 West 2nd St., Grand Island, with Derek Apfel officiating. Burial will be in Trenton Cemetery, Trenton, NE., at 3:00 pm. Visitation hours will be on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 pm at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family.

Lois M. Schmitt was born June 9, 1930 near Trenton in Hitchcock County, Nebraska the daughter of John Oren & Mable (Marietta) Makings. She grew up and received her education in Trenton, graduating from Trenton High School with the class of 1948.

She was united in marriage to Robert L. Schmitt, May 8, 1948 in Trenton, Nebraska. The couple resided in Sidney, Nebraska, Wauneta, Nebraska, Columbus, Nebraska and Seibert, CO, before moving to Grand Island.

She loved to crochet, Swedish weaving and doing genealogy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert L. Schmitt of Grand Island, son & daughter-in-law, Larry R. & Jolene Schmitt of Grand Island, four daughters & sons-in-law, Kathryn & Ken Viken of Burlington, CO, Karen K. & Gene Iverson of Boise, ID, Betty A. Gumm of Marysville, Ohio, Brenda Jane & Dave Wiesen of Poplar, Wisconsin, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Mable Makings and two brothers, Marvin and Richard.
