Loretta J. Dawkins

Loretta June Dawkins, 72 of Grand Island passed away peacefully at her home. To honor her wishes cremation will take place.



Memorial services will be held 3 PM Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Apfel Funeral Home with Bev Hieb officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.



She was born on June 9, 1949 to Jim and Jean Minor. When she was about one year old her father died in a hunting accident. Her mother than married William Wilson and Loretta took Wilson for her last name. Growing up, she attended Dodge, Barr and Walnut middle school and graduated from Grand Island Senior High.



She married Bob Dawkins in North Platte, NE on August 23, 1974, where both worked for 6th Street Food Store. While in North Platte they made many lifelong friends. In 1994 they moved back to Grand Island when Bob got transferred. She became disabled due to a back injury.



Loretta and Bob traveled to many locations during their marriage and had many memorable outings with Bob’s softball team. She enjoyed crafts and playing cards.



She is survived by her husband, Bob; brother, Jim (Brenda) of Fremont; sisters, Jackie Sheeks, Joleen Prunty, and Lori Williams all of Grand Island; four stepchildren, Rob of Fullerton, Rex (Carrie) of Grand Island, Sandra (Dale) of Hastings and Susan (Bryon) of Iowa; step-brother, Eugene (Linda) Fuller of Grand Island; four step-sisters, Colleen Rhinehart of Chesapeake, VA, Charlene Webb of Shoreview, MN, Christine (Keith) Jones of Omaha, NE, and Eileen (Bryan) Berry of Red Cloud, NE.



She was preceded in death by her father and mother, stepdads; William Wilson and Merylin Fuller, her sister, Luanna Pokorney and special nephew, Nick Wilson.



A special thank you to Dr. Berg and Dr. Meyers, and for all the special friends that have reached out to Loretta. Thanks to Dean, Linda, Josie, Sue, Chris and her hospice team.
