Lorna Jean Loffer, 83, of Grand Island, formerly of Shelton, died Tuesday September 25, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the United Congregational Church in Grand Island with Rev. Lonnie Logan officiating. Inurnment will be at the Shelton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to the United Congregational Church. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family. Lorna was born on June 8, 1929 at Shelton, Nebraska, the daughter of Nelson and Verna (Wilcox) Freel. She grew up in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1946. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Loffer on March 30, 1946 in Smith Center, Kansas. The couple lived in Shelton before moving to Plattsmouth, Nebraska in 1954 where she lived for 30 years. The couple then moved back to Shelton where Lorna had lived until the death of her husband in August of 2002. Lorna worked as Child Care Specialist at a State Institution in Glenwood, Iowa for 8 years, Regional Director of ENCOR for 12 years, the Crisis Center in Grand Island for 5 years and then at CHRC for 1 year before retirement. She was a member of the United Congregational Church, the Eagles Auxillary in Plattsmouth and she was also a Hospice Volunteer. She enjoyed camping, traveling, and especially her grandchildren. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law; Robert L. and Audrey Loffer of Marengo, Iowa, Bill L. Loffer and Shelly Mason of Vincennes, Indiana, and Bradley L. and Kim Loffer of Bellevue, Nebraska, two daughters; Kathryn A. and husband Jim Hunter of Shelton, Nebraska and Jayn L. Lewis of Spokane, Washington, 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and special friends Marcella Derricksen and Joe Hodges. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lloyd Loffer, brother, Leon Sonny Freel, two grandchildren; Nick Loffer and Rebecca Dasher.
