Louis D. Jankovitz, 89, of Grand Island died Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society, Grand Island.
Memorial services are planned for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Apfel Funeral Home, Grand Island with the Rev. Michael Reiners officiating. Inurnment will be in Grand Island Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Louis Delbert Jankovitz was born May 25, 1929 in Giltner, Nebraska the son of William and Viola (Vance) Jankovitz. He lived in Giltner approximately three years before the family moved to Grand Island. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and Grand Island Senior High.
He entered the United States Air Force on June 12, 1947 and served until January 6, 1950 when he was honorably discharged. He returned to Grand Island where he owned and operated a Texaco Service Station. In 1954 he went to work for Caterpillar as a mechanic and was employed with them until 1983. He bought a service station and continued to work there for seven years. He relocated to St. Paul, Nebraska where he worked for Farmer’s Union Co-op. He later semi-retired and began to raise livestock: cattle and hogs. Ultimately, he moved back to Grand Island and bought Louie’s Laundry on 4th Street and looked after the neighborhood until his full retirement.
He enjoyed his work and loved to dance and roller skate in his younger days.
Those left to cherish his memory include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Kris Jankovitz of Atascadero, California, Russ Jankovitz, as well as Randy and Jamie Jankovitz all of Grand Island, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bill Jankovitz and Clarence Jankovitz, two sisters, Annabelle Thompson and Virginia Humiston.
