She then attended 1 year of Business College there. Marie then worked at the Hasting Naval Ammunition Depot.

She married Max Hugo Gruber on April 22, 1944, at St. Marys Cathedral in Grand Island. Mr. Gruber died on October 21, 1958.

Mrs. Gruber then worked in the drapery department at Wolbachs and then with the Blessed Sacrament School lunch program at the head cook. She then worked in the quality control department at Delicious Foods until her retirement.

She shared her artistic talents at Blessed Sacrament Church with the many banners she helped make while serving on the Art and Environment committee, as well as tending to the church plants and flowers for many years.

Singing in the church choir for over 35 years was a great source of spiritual comfort to her. Marie and her husband were among the 190 original families making up the newly formed Blessed Sacrament Church in 1949.

She also enjoyed selling Avon Products, and her customers became wonderful friends over those years.

Survivors include her daughters, Frances Rieken of Grand Island and Jacque Battiato of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Rebecca A. Johnson and Rochelle M. Rieken both of Grand Island, Joey Battiato, Maria Battiato and Daniel Battiato all of Lincoln; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph Kramer of Box Elder, SD.
