Hastings resident, Marilyn J. Johnson, 82, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018 at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.



Services will be Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 11 am at First United Methodist Church, Hastings with Rev. Greg Lindenberger officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Visitation will be Monday, March 5, 2018 from 5 pm to 7 pm with family present at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home is in care of the family.



Memorials may given to the First United Methodist Chancel Choir, Hastings.



Marilyn was born March 15, 1935 to Harold and Alvena (Joekel) Whyman in Sterling, CO. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1953 then attended 2 years at Hastings College. She married Duane Johnson in Sterling CO on September 4, 1955. Marilyn worked as a secretary for First Presbyterian Church in Hastings during college, then the Hastings Regional Center and retired in 1988 as the secretary from First United Methodist Church in Hastings.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Chancel Choir member of 60 years, United Methodist Women and sponsored the church youth fellowship. She was also a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and was the chairman for the Hastings Chapter. Marilyn loved to read and going to the library and she often read to the children there. She was a former Sunday school teacher and loved music and sewing. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren; she was a caretaker to her sister -in-law. Marilyn was a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother.



She is survived by her husband Duane of Hastings, daughter, Sandra (Russ) Smith of Kearney, son, Dr. Michael Johnson (Rachelle) of Hastings, daughter, Karen (Tom) Stein of St. Louis, MO, son, Corey (Lori) Johnson of Littleton, CO, 8 grandchildren, Emily Stein, Nathan Stein, Timothy Smith, Sarah Johnson, Anna Johnson, Samuel Johnson, Chasyn Johnson, Konrad Johnson, two sisters, Janet Sanchez of Omaha and Sharon (Don) Clement of Phoenix, AZ, one brother, Larry (Dee) Whyman of Sonoma, CA and one sister-in-law, Carol Johnson of Kenesaw, NE.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Laura Smith and brother in law Benny Sanchez.
