Mary Lou June Buzz Hammond

Mary Lou June Buzz Hammond, 79 of Grand Island died Thursday, January 21, 2016, at CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln, from injuries sustained in a house fire.

Graveside memorial services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Derek Apfel will officiate. Cremation has taken place.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mary was born October 15, 1936, at Hooper, NE to Leo and Florence (Hankins) Weiman. She married Richard Dick Hammond on August 27, 1954. She was a life long resident of Grand Island.

Mary loved her time she spent outside gardening, horses and nursing small animals back to health.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Valerie Hammond of Omaha, NE; two grandchildren, Ashley and Johnathan; six sisters, Bonnie Schnabel of Lenexa, KS, Phyllis Nelson of Aurora, NE, Sharon Latimer of Central City, NE, Judy Steeple of Woodlands, TX, Nadine Nelson of Grand Island and Diane Garcia of Raymore, MO; niece Bonnie Preisendorf as well as other numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents, Florence and Leo Weiman; and sister, Shirley.
