Mary N. Reitan, 89, a life-long resident of Grand Island, died Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island. Celebration of life will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, Grand Island with the Rev. Caroline Price-Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 4 until 7 PM on Monday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Mary Reitan was born, June 30, 1927 at Grand Island Nebraska the daughter of Henry H.P. & Clara (Nielsen) Zieg. She grew up and received her education in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High with the class of 1945. She attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to C. John Jack Reitan, February 5, 1950, in Grand Island. The couple made their home in McCook for five years before returning to Grand Island where they remained. Jack preceded her in death, February 21, 2005.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving the offices of Deacon and Elder and Clerk of the Session for 34 years. She was also a founding member of Chapter GP P.E.O. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading and loved spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son & daughter-in-law, John & Susan Reitan of Crown Point, Indiana, a daughter, Kathy Quinn of Lincoln, five grandchildren: Kaitlin Quinn Westling (Matt) , Joshua Quinn (Abby), Joseph Reitan (Liz), Steven Reitan (Ashley), and Rachel Reitan, five great granddaughters: Quinn Mae Westling, Delaney Westling, Everly Reitan, Hannah Reitan and Murphy Quinn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C. John Jack Reitan, son-in-law, James Quinn, and a sister, Betty French.
