Hastings resident, Melvin F. Salmen, 91 died Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at Perkins Pavilion, GSV, Hastings, NE. Rosary will be Friday, February 3, 2006 at 7:30 PM at the Brand-Wilson Chapel. Services will be Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 10:00 AM at the St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, Hastings, NE with Father Larry Ghyra officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, NE. Visitation will be Thursday, February 2, 2006 from 9 AM to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home with the family present 7 PM to 9 PM and one hour prior to the services at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Mr. Salmen was born December 3, 1914 to Henry and Laura (Determan) Salmen in Baker, NE. He attended elementary school in Baker, NE. He married Vaiona Cue, August 14, 1933; she died April 15, 1992. He then married Dorothy Anderson on May 29th 1993 at the St. Cecelia's Catholic Church. He owned and operated a trucking business in Fairfax, SD, for many years before assuming a position of manager of the grain elevator in Fairfax, SD, for 5 years. Resigning that position in 1956 to assume the position of manager of the Trumbull, NE Co-op, (Now Heartland Co-op). He was inducted into the Co-Op managers Hall of fame in 2001. He retired from that position in 1978 after 22 years of service. He and his wife Vaiona moved to Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, NE, in 1988. He was a member of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church and a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus member of Council #1123. An active member of the Crosier Lay Apostolate of Hastings plus serveralother organizations. He is survived by wife Dorothy, 4 sons, Dennis of Trumbull, Robert, Arthur and Arlen all of Hastings, NE. 4 daughters, Jean Opbroek of Hastings, NE, Kathy Schultz of Giltner, NE, Sharon Heyen of Hastings, NE and Carol Lytle of Bellevue, NE. 3 Step-Children, Pat Baker of Trenton, NE, Eugene Anderson of California and Stewart Anderson of Florida. 24 Grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren 6 Step Great Granchildren. He is preceded in death by 1 daughter Dorothy, 1 sister, Helen Brophy and 1 brother Chester. Memorials may be given to Families Choice.
