Melvin E. Olston, 73, of Chapman, died Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln, NE. A private family service will be held at Apfel Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday evening from 4 to 8 pm with Melvins family greeting friends from 6 to 8 pm at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society or to Heartland Lutheran High School. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family. Melvin E. Olston was born on January 30, 1940 in Seward, Nebraska, the son of Norman B. and Ruth O. (Lloyd) Olston. He grew up and went to elementary school in Goehner, Nebraska and graduated from Seward High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1957, he was honorably discharged in 1965. Melvin was united in marriage to Dorothy Cookie Kruse on February 2, 1961 in Glenwood, Iowa. Melvin worked for various construction companies until 1965 when he went to work for Missouri Valley Construction. He later worked for Diamond Engineering until his retirement. Melvin was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed Nascar, gardening, fixing antique cars in his garage, being with his cats, but especially time with his children, grandchildren, and his special friends Cork and Sandy and their family. Melvin is survived by his wife Dorothy Cookie Olston of Chapman, his daughter Tammy Scheer of Grand Island, 4 grandchildren, Jasper and Dani Scheer of Worms, Jesse Scheer of Norfolk, Chelsea Scheer of Grand Island and Rochelle Scheer of Grand Island, five great-grandchildren, Chloe, William, Titus and Scarlett Scheer and Audryana Hobbs. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, James and Norma Olston of Lincoln, and a sister and brother-in-law, Rosanna and Jerry Garrett of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lola Welch and a half brother, Glen Olston.
