Mildred M. Wiles

Mildred M. Wiles, 94, of Norfolk, NE, formerly from Grand Island, died March 18th at Norfolk Veterans Home. Services will be at 10:00 AM on Monday March 21, 2016 at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Interment will follow at Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 to 5 PM at the funeral home. Mildred was born on July 6, 1921 at Lincoln, Kansas, the daughter of George W. and Nellie (McCoy) Thayer. She attended rural country school at Lincoln, Kansas and secondary school at Udall, Kansas. She married Rolland Gene E. Wiles on October 31, 1942 at Lincoln, Kansas, while he was serving in the United States Army. They resided for 13 years at Lincoln, Kansas and then moved to Franklin, Nebraska. They lived there until 1968, at which time they moved to Grand Island, where they remained until 2013 when they moved to Norfolk Veterans Home, Norfolk, Nebraska. She was employed by the Erin Motel in Grand Island for 10 years, but her love was being a wife, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma and homemaker. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, participating in the Martha Circle and helping with Funeral dinners. She especially enjoyed sewing, embroidery and always liked to attend the church sewing day. One of Mildreds loves was their Grandchildren and making sure they had enough to eat when they came to visit. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws, Kent and Becky Wiles, Norfolk, NE, Trent and Pat Wiles, Hudson, IA; four grandchildren, Gina (Aaron) Penn, Eric (Tara) Wiles, Nicole (Peyton) Deterding, Chad (Cindy) Wiles, eight great grandchildren, Alexa and Kira Penn, Pacey and Crosby Wiles, Jaece and Hailey Deterding, Brayden and Kennedi Wiles and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Gene, her parents, six brothers, Charles, Joe, George, Ralph, Grover, and Dale Thayer and one sister, Dorothy White.
