Norman E. Garbers

Norman E. Garbers, 81, of Grand Island, NE, died Monday February 4, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society-Grand Island. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Friday, February 8, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Adam Snoberger officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Hour Ministry. Norman was born on April 4, 1937, in Grand Island, NE, the son of John and Anna (Weber) Garbers. He grew up on a farm west of Chapman, NE, and attended District #2, Merrick County, Trinity Lutheran School, Grand Island and Chapman High School.

He served in the United States Armed Forces and was honorably discharged. In 1968 he worked at New Holland and in 1981 at Hornaday Manufacturing. He also farmed during this time.

On April 15, 1961, Norman was united in marriage to Lucille Wichmann at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple lived on the family farm west of Chapman where they farmed until 1989; when they moved to Grand Island. He was then employed at the Conoco Café and Younkers.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and baptized and confirmed. Norman loved watching football, jigsaw puzzles, and listening to Billy Graham.

Survivors include: three sons: Marvin and Tami Garbers of Chapman, NE, David Garbers of Grand Island, NE, Dennis and Deann Garbers, Archer, NE; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother-in-law: Eldon (Rita) Wichmann; and many nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Lucille in 2001; brother: Harlan Garbers; infant brother and infant sister; sister-in-law: Mary Ann (Harlan) Kroeger; and a niece and nephew.
